The adjutant general of the Commonwealth, as executive administrator of the state's Military Establishment, was made responsible for annual inspections of militia troops pursuant to St 1793, c 14, though at certain periods, notably the Civil War years, the task was delegated to an inspector general. This series consists of letterpress copies of correspondence regarding such inspections from the adjutant general, acting as inspector general, to assistant inspector generals and other subordinate officers.
